Four 16x16" Tiles
This assignment truly showed how to design for production. With one mold, I created four identical wall tiles where the geometric design flowed from one to the next. The mold was created from shapes that I CNCed out of a block of wood. I created pocket cuts to inlay the pieces and create different heights throughout the composition. I then inserted small details such as beveling all the edges, and adding small holes to help create defined shapes. Once the mold was finalized, it was time to thermoform the piece.
The piece did not come out complete when thermoformed, I still had a lot of polishing to do. I had to cut the cast out of the sheet of plastic and morph the edges using a heat gun to create a crisp edge. The last step I had was coming up with a hanging mechanism. I ended up measuring out evenly-spaced holes on the back, being able to be hung from any angle.
